DICJ working to improve junket, staff standards

Macau’s gaming regulator is working to improve the standard of junket agents and to raise the level of staff training to ensure the quality of the local industry, Paulo Martins Chan, head of the local gaming regulator said.

In the opening address to the MGS Entertainment Show, which began on Tuesday, Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau director Chan said the government has been working on the “standards and quality” of the junkets and their representatives, who he said are “key” to the health of the gaming industry in Macau.

He also said the government will continue to support efforts to provide diversified training programs for staff in the industry as it works to increase its non-gaming offerings.

“The government will try to provide diversified training programs for the staff in the gaming industry and to make sure that the direction of the industry will provide better opportunities,” he said, adding the DICJ will continue its efforts to support the government in its attempts to diversify the local economy to provide sustainable growth.

He also stressed the cap on table growth will be maintained, along with more efforts to add non-gaming elements as the market switches focus to the mass sector.

“We sincerely believe that we are welcoming a more diversified economy,” he said. “We are trying to enhance the cooperation between non gaming and gaming factors and we look forward to a better quality and healthy direction.”

Chan said 19 junkets of 145 junkets have to improve operations following a DICJ inspection.

“Some of them are not satisfactory so we are giving some time for them to improve until the end of the year - which is the renovation date of the junket, because the junket license is renewed every year. So until the renewal we will observe what is the improvement,” he told local media on the sidelines of the conference.
