Entertainment and SMEs are solution to Macau's slump, experts say

Experts at a seminar held in Hengqin said Macau should focus on bringing in more entertainment along with supporting local SMEs, TDM Macau reported.

"This seminar, actually, tries to put together the business executives from the hospitality and the gaming industry to see if we could come up with some ideas," said Jacky So, director of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management

Glenn McCartney, professor of Hospitality and Gaming Management at the University of Macau, said it is important for the economy to move strategically.

“We're looking at strategic thinking; we're looking at how we're going to move forward in a more responsible way because, at the moment now, we call it the "knee-jerk reactions". We're reacting, not getting proactive," he said.

With Macau’s key market, Chinese VIPs, dropping in number, McCartney says the city should take some inspiration from the way Las Vegas has grown.

"They have a lot of competition in America but they keep their position as a leadership because they have non-gaming. They've developed a very, very healthy non-gaming environment over the last decade," said McCartney.
