File an affidavit or ban online lotteries: High Court

The Bombay High Court has given the Maharashtra government an ultimatum - file an affidavit or close all online lotteries within two weeks, local media reports.

The directives have come as a result of the Maharashtra government's apathy in not filing a reply over a public interest litigation (PIL) on online lotteries, filed by Chandan Trivedi, which called for an immediate ban on unauthorized and alluring online lotteries.

The PIL alleged that over 1,300 unauthorized online lotteries were operating in the state, and stated the government had permitted only 13 online lotteries.

So far these operators, who are able to circumvent tax payable to the state, have caused a loss of Rs933 crore ($148.8 million) to state revenues, said the petitioner.
