G2E kicks off with iGaming, compliance talks

The industry’s biggest gaming expo kicked off in Las Vegas, with experts leading discussions on some of the big topics shaping the business, such as regulation and compliance, and iGaming.

Legal advisors and regulators gathered to speak on the trending topics of illegal gaming, including the overarching implications of global gaming issues and legal landscapes, legalizing sports betting and the growing issue of state incursions into Tribal government gaming.

In the Embrace Sports Books: Integrity of Sports & Wagering seminar, a panel of experts explored how sports integrity and sports-betting practices are collaborating in hopes of moving forward the legalization of sports-betting. The panel also debated the nation's choice between creating a fairly regulated system that benefits the marketplace versus the ever present illegal gaming issues that stand today, which seems to be a common theme throughout compliance, law and regulation within the casino-gaming industry.

Also discussed on the first day of the conference was iGaming, which is now legal in three US states and growing rapidly around the world.

In The Legal Side of iGaming: Consequences, Opportunities and Concerns, senior legal analyst Kevin Cochran of Gambling Compliance Ltd. reviewed the current legal status in different regions of the world, specifically how current regulations in U.S. are becoming more strict, and how those regulations differ from other areas around the globe.

Within the seminar, Cochran also touched on best practices of iGaming compliance, how technical standards are being set and reviewed, and which jurisdictions employ the most ideal and respected regulations.

At tomorrow’s show the long-debated issue of sports betting will be discussed, addressing the question of whether or not this recent momentum on the issue is a business threat to existing regulated sports wagering outlets or a new opportunity for the industry.

AGA president and CEO Geoff Freeman will also share how far the industry has come in terms of economic impact, mainstream acceptance and consumer perception.

Meanwhile, Wells Fargo analysts noted that Asian themed games continue to gain popularity. and think that operators would prefer a more balanced offering this year, with more unlicensed and Asian-oriented games.

“We have seen Asia themed titles perform well in recent years, including SGMS’s (formerly SHFL) 88 Fortunes title under the Duo Fu Duo Cai progressive link. IGT is one of the few manufactures that have invested notable R&D in these themes.  IGT’s Asian themes introduced this year have already surpassed last year and management expects to have even more in 2016 and 2017,” said Wells Fargo senior analyst Cameron McKnight in a note.
