Galaxy pitches for Osaka Yumeshima IR

Galaxy Entertainment held a press event in Osaka on Wednesday to make their local pitch, providing competition for MGM Resorts.

Among the points that Galaxy’s team emphasized is that an IR development is a long-term investment, and few can match the financial resources that this Macau-based operator can bring to bear.

Ted Chan, chief operating officer of Galaxy Entertainment Japan, has been characteristically more cautious in his pronouncements than MGM’s James Murren, who declared in August that it was still possible to open the Yumeshima IR before the crucial 2025 World Expo. According to Chan (and most independent analysts) that is likely to prove too ambitious a goal, though he did hint that some sort of partial opening might still be feasible.

Galaxy has generally kept a low profile in its Japan bid, building up a large and powerful in-country team, but not committing to any particular regional focus.

They have said more, however, than the only other competitor remaining in the Osaka race, Genting Singapore, which has made virtually no effort to date to engage with the local media or local communities in Japan, though they too are clearly devoting considerable financial resources to their Japan bid.
