Gambling could see higher tax rate

Activities such as betting and gambling in India could attract a Goods and Services tax (GST) rate of more than 18 percent, says Union Revenue Secretary Dr. Hasmukh Adhia, according to local media reports.

“We’ll see if there are any such services which are to be charged at higher than 18 percent. We are yet to study the betting model and the gambling model. There are taxes on those also. We don’t know what is the existing (total) entertainment tax and VAT on these activities,” said Adhia in an interview with the Indian Express over the weekend.

Adhia added that the new tax rates would be decided in May, or somewhere close to the roll-out date of July 1, 2017.

The final decision will be made by the GST Council, he said.
