Gambling levels have fallen in NSW, study finds

A recent survey from the NSW government has revealed that gambling levels have fallen compared to eight years ago. 

According to a new study into gambling in NSW commissioned by the Responsible Gambling Fund, a survey of 10,000 people found that only 53 percent participated in gambling over the last 12 months, compared to 65 percent in 2011. 

Lotteries were the most common form of gambling, followed by slot machines, instant scratchies, and race betting. 

According to the study, the rate of problem gambling has remained relatively stable in NSW, changing from 0.8 percent of the population to 1 percent. 

It found that gambling problems were more prevalent in young people aged 18-24 years of age. 

The study also noted particular risks around online sports betting, which is the fastest-growing type of gambling. The survey found that just under one in 10 adults (8 percent) had gambled online in the past year with race betting being the most common form of online gambling.
