Gaming and junket workers fall in May-Jul period

The total number of people employed in gaming and junket activities fell 1.8 percent in the May-July period, signaling a possible slowdown in the Macau gaming market.

According to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC), around 85,400 workers were employed in the gaming and junket sector in the period.

This is down from nearly 87,000 in the preceding quarter.

While Macau GGR returned to growth in May, July saw GGR fall 3.5 percent on weaker VIP, due mainly to perceived increased scrutiny of the junket sector.

Macau’s August results, which are due to release next week, is expected to fall 2-4 percent in the month, impacted by Typhoon Lekima earlier in the month, and continuing US-China trade tensions.
