Gaming workers demand higher salary, no smoking

Around 400 gaming employees took to the streets on Tuesday, demanding better remuneration and treatment, Macau News reports.

Cloee Chao, president of the New Macau Gaming Staff Rights Association said the workers are mainly seeking for 14 months of salary, an overall salary increase of 6 percent, and a ban on smoking.

Ms. Chao cited a 20 percent growth in gaming revenues over the last year, but said the salary of gaming workers has not even kept up with inflation.

“The salary of gaming workers only increased by 2.5 per cent for the past two years and it is not catching up with the current inflation rate,” she said.

“Up until now, they [the gaming operators] still have not announced anything about offering 14 months salary…previous years they would announce about the coming year’s bonus arrangement the beginning of the year.”

Chao has urged the government to consider the remuneration for gaming workers as part of the approval process for the next round of gaming concessions.
