Global Market Advisors issues white paper on the effects of urban casino development

Global Market Advisors (GMA), a leading international consulting firm to the casino gaming, lodging, and airline industries, has issued a white paper on the effects of urban casino development.  The paper, titled "Casinos and the City" explores the history of casino development in cities, past and current trends, and recommendations for future development of casinos in urban areas.

Andrew Klebanow, a partner at GMA, researched casino development in multiple urban areas, from their earliest forms to today's newest properties, documentingnotable successes and failures.

The white paper discusses both Galaxy Cotai and the cluster of casinos on the Peninsula. Andrew Klebanow compliments the Peninsula casinos "because of how they relate to the street grid." On the other hard he admits being "a bit tough" on Galaxy as he sees it as an island, or "more like a fortress" casino that is walled off from Taipa.

Mr. Klebanow is presenting his findings as well as recommendations for planning and building casinos with urban economic development in mind at the Asia Pacific Conference on Gambling and Commercial Gaming in Beijing on April 14, 2015.

According to Mr. Klebanow, downtown revitalization is a desirable outcome of well-planned casinos in urban areas. "Municipal governments sacrifice tens of millions of dollars to help developers build sporting venues in downtown commercial zones. Casinos can serve the same function without costs to taxpayers. This paper examines the factors critical to the design of urban casinos that can achieve those same goals."
