Goa BJP silent on casino issue

While opposition parties have promised a clampdown on casinos in the state in the lead up to the election, the Goa BJP party has remained silent on the issue, local media reports.

In October 2016, the Bombay High Court directed the Maharashtra government to respond within six months whether it intends to implement the Maharashtra Casinos (Control & Tax) Act, 1976.

Despite positive response by some government departments, the Maharashtra government has not yet acted upon the High Court's direction.

In a recent release of the BJP manifesto, Devendra Fadnavis sidestepped the question of whether the BJP would permit casinos in the state to promote tourism.

"When asked whether he would promote casinos in Maharashtra to boost tourism, Fadnavis dodged the question and said that he will answer this question in Maharashtra,” said Times of India in their report.
