Golden Week brought increase in mainland visitors


Macau’s Golden Week saw an increase in mainland visitors, which rose 9.6 percent year-on-year.

A total of 696,636 visitors came from mainland China in thee first seven days of the period.

Taiwan and Hong Kong also saw visitor growth in the period, rising 20.1 and 6.4 percent respectively.

Total visitor arrivals reached 844,522 for the first seven days of the period, up by 11.6 percent.

The numbers however did not translate its way into gaming revenues, with Bernstein noting a “disappointing” mix in gross gambling revenue.

“While GGR was generally in-line with our expectations, the mix was poorer than we had expected and mass was disappointing,” it said.

Average hotel occupancy rates of 3-5 star hotels rose 3.1 percentage points during the period, to 95.9 percent. On the other hand,  the average occupancy rate of 2-Star hotels was down 1.9 percentage points to 76.3 percent, whereas the average occupancy rate of guest houses fell by 1 percentage point to 74 percent.

Average room rates during the period saw a year-on-year increase of 7 percent, with the average room rates of 5-star and 4star hotels at MOP2,120 and MOP1,396, respectively.
