Government launches probe into illegal cockfight betting

The Philippines House of Representatives has launched a congressional inquiry into the operation of illegal cockfight betting in the country, local media reports.

According to officials from the Philippine Racing Commission, the illegal gambling is allegedly being carried out at off-track betting sites in various parts of the country, and they claim that cockfight gambling and other illegal gambling schemes have siphoned away betting revenue.

According to the Manila Bulletin, PRC officials led by Chairman Andrew Sanchez said that, while betting on cockfights is not considered illegal, it is doubtful whether the use of off-track betting sites are legal.

On Tuesday, the House Committee on Games and Amusement led by Paranaque City Rep. Gust S. Tambunting declared it will conduct an investigation into illegal online cockfight gambling.
