Government to introduce penalties for gaming violations

Macau’s government is planning to introduce new penalties and regulations in its gaming industry, says Bloomberg.

Last month, Bloomberg reported that some junket operators were violating a mobile phone ban set by the government. In response the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau said it will “complete supplementary laws for violations and related penalties that weren’t previously included, amend outdated rules, and bring in new regulations.”

Currently the gaming regulator currently only advises its enforcement agents to issue verbal warnings to violators, said Daiwa Capital Markets Hong Kong Ltd. analyst Jamie Soo, but new penalties will give enforces more power to deter the illicit practices.

Soo said the planned penalties “will further hurt the revenue of the struggling industry in the short term.”
