Government urges gaming operators to hire Chinese security guards

The Macau government has quietly been urging gaming operators to avoid hiring non-Chinese security guards, according to a report by the Macau News Agency.

“We just got an informal notice from a client that the government asked them to hire more Chinese security for casinos. In fact, this has been done without any official notice from the government or from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ),” the head of a local security firm was quoted as saying.

The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) told the news outlet that more than 10,000 security guards were employed in Macau as of June 2019, but that there was no breakdown available by nationality.

Nevertheless, it is estimated that about half of these security guards are Macau residents and the other half non-residents, including Mainland Chinese.

“We believe the gaming operators have all generally been informed unofficially of these directions by government departments, but they will never issue an official notification,” the head of the local security firm added.
