Govt looking at ways to amend Gaming Act

The Malaysian government is currently developing new legislation to aid in its fight against illegal gambling, local media reports.

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the government is currently studying the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 to see where changes could be made.

"The (Home) Ministry, together with the police, are working with the Attorney-General's office to see if a full change (is needed) to the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 to reflect new elements in gambling crime," said Dr Ahmad Zahid.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said the government was also looking at more preventative laws that would tackle non-conventional gambling methods such as online and mobile gambling.

“Special attention should be given to improve the online gambling law because online gambling activities, which can be done via smartphones, are fast becoming rampant right now.”

“We are also collaborating with Interpol to create a firewall for telcos to prevent this from spreading," he said on Tuesday.
