Grand Lisboa Palace opening likely to be postponed

SJM’s Grand Lisboa Palace will have its opening delayed following a fire at the casino’s construction site over the weekend, according to executive director Angela Leong On Kei.

The gaming operator was originally planning to open the new property by the second half of 2018.

“I believe everything relating to the typhoon or the fire will have a certain level of impact [on the opening], but for now we still haven’t evaluated the level of damage so there is nothing I can concretely say on the matter,” Leong told local reporters.

88 workers had to be evacuated from the site on Saturday, with Macau’s Judiciary Police believing arson to be involved.

Speaking to local reporters, Leong said the company may consider a staged opening of the new property if construction falls behind schedule.

"We will see which parts of the property can be opened first, maybe we can open the Grand Lisboa Palace partially like we did for the Hotel Jai Alai. But this isn't what we hope for, we want to open all facilities at the same time", she said.
