GSA Japan holds launch party

The US-based Gaming Standards Association (GSA) held a party on Wednesday evening to celebrate the launch of its Japanese organization, GSA Japan.

Hosting an audience of about 80 people representing various companies interested in the emerging gaming industry, GSA President Peter DeRaedt explained that this was the fourth branch of the organization to be formed, following the original US branch and then Macau and Europe.

Speaking later with Asia Gaming Brief, GSA Europe Managing Director Mark Pace revealed that GSA Japan would be exploring three major roles in the coming years.

First, it would provide a source of information and a venue for communication for Japanese regulators, operators, suppliers, and others which is unbiased by particular commercial interests. This could include playing a key role in the introduction of standards and protocols common to those operating within the Japanese gaming industry.

Second, GSA Japan would explore the possibility of partnering with Japanese universities or other institutions to provide a high-level technical education to Japanese students. The purpose would be to train native Japanese who can later assume senior management positions in the country’s own gaming industry instead of relying overmuch on imported talent.

Finally, GSA Japan may have a role in assisting the casino management systems within the IRs, ensuring that information is being correctly delivered and that the staff is properly trained.

GSA President DeRaedt was also keen to have it understood that GSA Japan has absolutely no affiliation with Japan Institution of Gaming Standards (JIGS), which was launched as a general incorporated association in 2017. Although there is a similarity in the name and the stated goals, they are completely separate entities.
