Harbor association opposes Yokohama IR

The prospects for a Yokohama bid to locate an IR at the city’s Yamashita Pier took a heavy blow last week when the Yokohama Harbor Transport Association declared its opposition to a casino.

At a meeting held last Thursday, chairman Yukio Fujiki presented the association’s plan for a “harbor resort” with MICE facilities at its core, but without any casino.

Chairman Fujiki noted that somewhere between 60-80 percent of local residents oppose locating a casino in Yokohama. He also pointed out that inviting a casino also opened up the prospect that foreign investors would take the lead in Yamashita Pier development, when the local business community was perfectly capable of managing their own city by themselves.

Fujiki stated, “We do not want to take up a casino that will be opposed by many citizens. Rather, we would like to create new Yokohama port facilities that focus on exhibition halls and the like.”

The Yokohama Harbor Transport Association is a federation representing almost 250 local businesses.
