Hotel occupancy and rates fall year-on-year

Macau hotel occupancy and average room rates suffered declines in May compared to 2015, according to data from the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

Macau saw an overall occupancy rate of 81.9 percent in May, an increase from April, with 5-star and 4-star hotels contributing most to the increase.

However, average room rates saw a 1.4 percent sequential decrease to MOP 1,270 in May, down from MOP 1,288 in April.

Last month, Morgan Stanley posted that Macau’s 16Q1 industry EBITDA was down 7 percent year on year, driven by weak retail and hotel performance, bad debt and mix change.

The brokerage added retail and hotel weakness is likely to continue.

On a year-to-year comparison, the general occupancy rate in Macau hotels decreased 1.2 per cent in May, while average room rates went down 15.6 per cent, from MOP1,504 in 2015, according to the data from MGTO.
