India’s Karnataka state mulls casino cruises

Karnataka, a state in southwestern India, is studying the option of floating offshore casinos to boost its tourism sector.

However, it’s still not certain whether enough lawmakers in the state would back the proposal, local media reported. If approved, Karnataka would become the fourth Indian state to allow casino gambling after Goa, Daman and Sikkim.

Karnataka is looking at six ports along its coastline to facilitate floating casinos, which include Karwar Belekeri, Tadri, Malpe, Old and New Mangaluru ports, it said.

One option being considered is to allow gambling cruises, which would operate for three days and four nights, departing from Mangaluru port.

The second option includes the cruise being permanently stationed on sea and tourists being ferried in motor boats. This will include an overnight stay option with the facilities provided according to prevailing government policies and navigation laws.

The Times of India cited sources as saying the government is actively considering the casino option as part of its cruise tourism policy, which is likely to be discussed during the Invest Karnataka 2016 event in February.
