India's Nagaland unlikely to pass online skill games bill in December

The North-Eastern state of Nagaland in India is unlikely to pass the proposed bill related to online games of skill during the winter session of the legislative assembly held on Dec. 14.

The report from the select committee’s Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion and Regulation of Online Games of Skill Bill, 2015 is likely to be considered by the legislative assembly only in February or March 2016, according to local sources.

Nagaland was the first state in India to introduce special legislation to regulate and license online skill games like poker, rummy and fantasy sports. However, the Bill was not passed in July due to opposition from the powerful religious group Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC). The legislative assembly may either choose to make changes to the Bill or shelve the idea completely depending on opinion from various stakeholders.
