Installed gaming machines top 7.4m, Japan dominates

The number legally installed gaming machines worldwide in 2018 is estimated at 7,402,395, with Japan taking the lion’s share.

The figures were provided in a report from the Gaming Technologies Association (GTA) and cover slot machines, pachinko, video lottery terminals, gaming terminals and electronic gaming machines. The data is for legally installed terminals, whether they be in pubs and clubs, casinos, or even the corner store.

Japan had a total of 4,302,731 machines in 2018, dwarfing its nearest rival, the U.S., with an estimated installed base of 898,974.

Although pachinko is technically not classified as gambling, it’s well known that prizes are exchanged for money. 

Australia was estimated to have 196,301 machines installed in 2018, a reduction of 720 machines from the previous year, which gave it 2.6 percent of the world’s legally installed machines. The GTA said the data “once again dispels the myths around the proportion of gaming machine numbers in Australia, which does have the world’s lowest maximum bet limits.

Elsewhere in Asia, the Philippines has the largest installed base at 19,905, up from 17,476 just two years ago. Macau stood at 16,059 up from 13,826 while Cambodia numbered 7,660.
