Integrated resort could cost $10 billion: Adelson

An integrated resort in Japan could cost up to US$10 billion to develop, says Las Vegas Sands chief Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson, who has plans for his company to win operating rights in the country, made the comments during an investor conference in Tokyo, according to a report from Reuters.

"It would be at least what we paid in Singapore, $6 billion including the land, but it could be as much as $10 billion," said Adelson, referring to Sands’ Marina Bay property in Singapore.

But Adelson said the opportunity in Japan was much bigger than that of Singapore.

"It's the holy grail. It's the ultimate of business opportunities. Singapore was a warm up to this,” he said.

Japan passed legislation last year allowing for the development of integrated resorts in the country. Other operators currently eyeing opportunities in Japan include Bloomberry Resorts, Hard Rock Cafe International, Melco Crown Entertainment and Genting Singapore.
