IR Implementation Bill still on hold

No decision appears to have yet been made about the timing for the submission of the Abe government’s IR Implementation Bill to the National Diet. This comes despite an agreement between the political parties to extend the current extraordinary Diet session until December 9.

Initially the Diet session length was set at a surprisingly short eight-day length, but partially accommodating opposition party demands, it has now become a 39-day session.

Still, there is no sign that any progress will be made on IR-related legislation.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Keiichi Ishii—whose ministry is expected to have a central oversight role over IRs—was asked about the matter by a Japanese journalist at a press conference on the 2nd. He responded, “A specific system will be examined in the future by the government and the ruling party, but we will not be on time to submit the legislation.”

Ishii is the only government minister from the coalition Komeito party, whose support base is highly skeptical of plans to build casinos within Japan.
