Japanese public support for IR construction falls below 23 percent

Never a popular policy in the first place, the recent casino bribery scandal has lowered Japanese public support for the construction of domestic IRs to only 22.8 percent, according to the latest poll from Jiji Press.

Meanwhile, opposition to IR development is at 62.4 percent, a nearly 3-to-1 margin for the opponents. Even among those who identify as supporters of the conservative ruling party, a majority (53.2 percent) oppose the government’s pro-IR policy.

Polls have also found a weakening of public support for the Abe Cabinet in general.

On the other hand, as has been typical of the entire Abe Era, the decline in support for the government is not matched by any revival in support for opposition parties, which remain weak, divided, and unpopular.
