Judge urged to unseal documents in Sands China unfair dismissal case

A Clark County district judge in the U.S. has been petitioned by two organizations to unseal documents that potentially reveal business ties between Chinese triads and Las Vegas Sands, according to media reports.

The motions were filed by Guardian News & Media, publisher of the British newspaper The Guardian, and the Campaign for Accountability, a new nonprofit watchdog organization.

The documents form part of a case brought by former Sands China executive Steven Jacobs, who alleges he was wrongfully dismissed by the casino operator.

The documents were compiled by former Hong Kong police officer Steven Vickers and involve matters of extreme public interest namely possible business ties between Sands companies and Cheung Chi Tai and Heung Wah Keung, alleged organized crime figures in China, the reports said.

 

The Campaign for Accountability is basing its argument on “compelling public interest,” given the large amount of political donations made by Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson to the U.S. Republican presidential campaign.
