Landing delays Jeju Shinhwa opening after protests

Landing International has been forced to delay the transfer of its casino on Jeju island to its new IR complex after protests from local residents, the Korea Times reports.

The foreigner-only casino had been scheduled to move from the Hyatt Regency Jeju to Jeju Shinhwa World this month, but has failed to win approval for the move.

According to the report, Hong Kong-listed Landing has halted hiring at the new casino complex due to the uncertainty. The company has taken on 1,900 employees for the complex, which will also include theme parks and convention facilities.

Landing has also urged remaining workers to take leave to reduce costs, the report said.

The government of the island has said it will not issue any further casino licenses for Jeju, however, this was a relocation of an existing casino to a larger premises.
