Legislator demands 24/7 smoking inspectors

A Macau legislator is pushing the government to appoint permanent inspectors in gaming areas to prevent infringements of the smoking law, Macau Business Daily reports.

Newly elected legislator and former casino dealer, Leong Sun Iok criticized casinos for trying to get around the requirements of the smoking law.

“[Casinos have] found many methods to go around the law …and allow customers to smoke,” said Leong.

The legislator said there was cases in which the necessary signs were not affixed in areas where smoking is not allowed, smoking areas have been altered, and even cases where casinos have told customers that it was permissible to smoke in nonsmoking areas.

“Casinos violate the law at will, and the workers can no longer tolerate it,” he said.

In the first five months of the year, Macau’s residents and tourists were hit with more than 3,300 citations for smoking related offences.

Leong suggested that the government should “simplify law enforcement procedures by inspectors” and “mobilize [inspectors] to stay in casinos 24 hours a day”.
