Loan-shark ring busted

11 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a casino loansharking gang, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said at a press conference on Monday.

The 11 suspects, include two locals and nine mainlanders.

According to the spokesperson, the police arrested four mainland men for their involvement in a loansharking case in November last year. Later, the police discovered they were part of a major casino loansharking gang.

The gang has been responsible for several kidnappings of punters unable to repay loans, and reportedly operated in conjunction with criminal networks from Mainland China.

Total contracted loans amounted to up to MOP 10 million, said the PJ.

All 11 suspects will be transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP), facing arraignments on organized crime membership and usury charges, the spokesperson said.
