Local spending on casino gaming up 110 percent


The average monthly spend on gaming in casinos by Macau residents has risen nearly 110 percent since 2013, according to a survey conducted by a University of Macau (UM) researcher, Macau TDM reports.

The study, requested by the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) has revealed the monthly spend on gaming in casinos by locals had reached MOP1,000 (US$125).

The number of residents admitting to participating in gaming activities has also risen slightly from 49.5 percent in 2013.

51.5 percent of residents participating in the study stated they enjoyed gambling, a 2 percent increase since the last study, with males between 25 and 34 years of age being the largest percentage of gambling residents.

In terms of gambling type, 81.9 percent of respondents who said they gambled said they enjoyed betting on the lotto, 60.1 percent enjoyed casino gaming, while 50 percent said they enjoyed betting on horse racing.

According to TDM, around 2.5 of total respondents were considered to have met the criteria of problem gamblers, and 10 respondents (0.5 percent) showed signs of having a ‘serious gambling problem’, and gambling mostly in casinos.
