Macau considers easing Chinese travel restrictions

The Macau SAR government said it is considering easing entry restrictions for travelers from mainland China, as the spread of the virus is starting to taper off, local media reports. 

“The current situation of COVID-19 in mainland China is easing, infection numbers in many provinces and cities have not increased for many days, so we are evaluating the current policies towards mainland China,” said a Health Bureau spokesperson on Wednesday.

However, at the same time, the government is also looking to increase restrictions on those coming from Europe, with cases rising from the region. 

“However, regarding the current situation of the epidemic in European countries, we are considering placing more European countries on the high-risk areas list.”

On Wednesday, Macau initiated a mandatory medical examination for anyone that visited Norway in the past two weeks, due to serious outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus there. 

South Korea, Japan, Italy, France, Spain and Germany are currently considered by the Macau SAR government as high-risk areas, requiring any persons arriving from there to undergo a 14-day quarantine.
