Macau full-time employees up as dealer numbers down in 15Q2

The number of full-time employees in Macau’s gaming sector rose 1.3 percent year-on-year in 15Q2, while the number of dealers dropped by 2.5 percent, according to official data.

During the period there were 57,422 full-time employees in the industry with the number of dealers falling to 25,072.

In June, average earnings, excluding bonuses and allowances, of full-time employees stood at MOP21,480 ($2,689)  up 6.5 percent year-on-year, while dealer average earnings increased 6 percent to MOP18,580. 

Operators have cited staff as one of the biggest costs eating into revenues as the industry struggles to reinvent itself amid a downturn. Casinos have been proactive in retraining their staff to enable them to work in newly established non-gaming areas.

The sector had 44,769 participants attend training courses provided by casinos, up substantially by 158.4 percent  year-on-year. The majority of the participants attended courses in gaming and entertainment services, followed by business and administration.

The second quarter saw fewer hires at 1,972, a decrease from 3,124 in the same quarter of 2014, bringing the employee recruitment rate down by 2 percentage points year-on-year to 3.5 percent.
