Macau hotels begin to suspend operations

With the mandated two-week closure of all casinos and a dramatic drop-off in visitors to the territory, a number of hotels in Macau are beginning to suspend operations.

According to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), four hotels (three in Cotai and one in Macau), with a total capacity of 1,450 rooms, will close from Friday.

The three hotels in Cotai are understood to be Sands’ properties -- Four Seasons Hotel Macao, St. Regis Macao Cotai Strip, and Conrad Macao Cotai Strip.

A press release on the company’s measures to combat the Wuhan Coronavirus explained, “Sands China has scaled down the operations of its hotels, malls, dining and other facilities and services, in line with the Macao government’s call to avoid public gatherings and to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.”

Other Macau hotels are expected to announce suspension of operations in the coming days.
