Macau operators’ recent results confirm mass is the majority

Mass markets and slots accounted for exactly 50 percent of gross gaming revenue in 2015, and could reach as much as 57 percent in 2016, according to Union Gaming.

As of Galaxy Entertainment’s fourth quarter results released on Thursday, all of Macau’s major operators have now reported their results for 2015. Macau’s mass market and slots accounted for 50 percent of GGR for the year, and it is noted that in Y15Q3 and Y15Q4, mass and slots GGR represented 52 percent and 53 percent of total GGR, respectively.

“Heading into 2016 it continues to appear that the lower tiers of the customer base are demonstrating the most strength,” says Union Gaming’s analysts. “We say this because, with the exception of Wynn Macau, the balance of the Big 6 have consistently reported that slot GGR growth has been better (or at least less worse) than mass table growth during each of the last three quarters.”

“As additional projects come online in Cotai over the next two years we expect to see not only a continued mix shift in GGR, but a more-pronounced geographical shift in revenue away from the Macau peninsula,” added Union gaming.
