Macau regulator meets with junket association, discusses improving regulation

Paulo Martins Chan, Director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) conducted a meeting on Friday with the Macau Gaming and Entertainment Promoters Association to discuss gaming regulation and law improvements, local media reports.

The DICJ director was joined by Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lionel Leong Vai Tac for the meeting on Jan. 8, along with representatives of the Macau junket association. The gaming regulator restated the important role that junkets played in Macau, but asked for enhanced communication with the group to improve Macau’s gaming industry’s competitiveness. Chan also said the priority is in improving the laws and regulation related to gaming, as well as to optimize deployment of resources within DICJ.

In Sep 2015, following the Dore junket theft scandal, the DICJ vowed to revise junket regulation, with the main focus being increased oversight and auditing of junket promoters.

The need for improvements was further emphasized earlier this week, when Macau Judiciary Police confirmed that L’Arc Hotel and Casino reported an alleged embezzlement of HK$100 million (US$12.9 million) by a senior staff member at the VIP gambling venue.
