Maharashtra mulls online lottery

The Maharashtra government is looking to shift its paper lottery to online in order to earn more revenue, local media reports.

Maharashtra principal secretary (planning) Vijay Kumar Gautam said the government is currently studying Kerala’s lottery model.

"At present, the Maharashtra government runs a paper lottery system. A proposal has been made to introduce an online lottery system which should be unveiled by April this year," he said.

At the moment, the state only receives Rs 132 crore (US$20.7 million) from lotteries, with only Rs 7 crore earned from state-owned lotteries.

Gautam says online lotteries are gaining popularity.

"The north eastern states are getting good revenue. The online lotteries of other states do good business in Mumbai," he noted.
