Major gambling bust in Maharashtra


Police in Thane city, Maharashtra, just outside Mumbai, raided club on Saturday and arrested 93 people on illegal gambling related charges.

Details are scarce, but police told the media that the local organization called Ananta Mitra Mandal ran the illegal gambling club near the main railway station, and that the ringleaders were named Abdul Rab Khan and Vijay Harawadekar.

The equivalent of about US$3,000 was also seized by police.

The Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act dates back to 1887, during the era of British rule, though it has been amended multiple times over the years.
