Melco commits to reducing plastic pollution

Melco Resorts & Entertainment has announced that it is “the first and only hospitality group and IR operator globally” to become a signatory to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

As a signatory to the commitment, Melco will remove all single-use plastic bottles at all employee areas and, by the end of 2020, plans to extend the ban to guest areas. It will also publish annual data on the company’s progress in eliminating plastic pollution, and targets will be reviewed every eighteen months.

Melco Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho commented, “We recognize plastic pollution is a global challenge and will endeavor to eliminate problematic plastic by placing this at the forefront of our sustainability efforts. As a leading IR operator and responsible corporate citizen, it is our duty to take concrete action by helping resolve some of the key environmental threats facing communities around us, in Macau and beyond. We believe we need to leave our environment in a better state for the next generation and Melco is thoroughly committed to doing its part.”

This campaign dovetails nicely with public policy in Japan, which has in recent months been taking the issue of plastic pollution more seriously. On a per capita basis, Japan is one of the leading plastic polluters in the world.
