Melco staff organize protest for better wages, bonuses

Melco gaming staff gathered on the weekend outside City of Dreams in Macau, demanding better wages and bonuses in line with other operators, Macau TDM reports.

The New Macau Gaming Staff Rights Association, which led the protest, said there were 3,000 people joining the demonstration. The Public Security Police said there were 850 participants at the peak of the protest.

Demands included having casino workers paid the equivalent to a 14th month salary.

"Our demands are really simple. We hope that there will be a bonus in both Summer and Winter. We only want a 14-month-pay per year benefit. We also want dealers to receive their provident fund in full, which should include both the base salary and tips," association leader Cloee Chao told local media.

Currently, Melco only contributes to their employees retirement fund based on their base salary.

The protest also called for Melco to improve its promotion system, and better enforcement of the smoking ban inside casinos.

"We only want the smoking ban to be implemented normally and really don’t want to see the situation where employees were prohibited from voicing out when it is obvious that a customer is violating rules."

Ms. Chao said her association will no longer hand petitions to the company, and will be going to the government to have their demands heard.
