Mumbai horse racing suspended over Covid-19 concerns


The Royal Western India Turf Club in Mumbai cancelled this past Sunday’s scheduled races and have suspended for an undetermined period of time.

A press statement explained, “In view of the advisories issued by the government regarding the precautionary measures to be taken for CoronaVirus, the Committee of the Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd., at its meeting held on Saturday, 14th March 2020 have decided not to conduct racing and off-course betting operations from tomorrow, i.e. Sunday, 15th March 2020 until further notice.”

The committee is hoping to be able to restart races as early as possible in April. The racing season had been scheduled to conclude on April 12.

Royal Western India Turf Club is an exclusive Indian sports club for horse racing, established in 1800, and which runs the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai and the Pune Race Course.
