Myanmar tourism ministry has no objection to casinos

Myanmar’s Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Ohn Maung, says that a relaxing of the country’s gambling laws will allow foreigner-only casinos to operate at island resorts, local media reports.

According to Eleven Myanmar, MP Aung Hlaing Win in the lower house on Friday asked whether the government had any plans to allow the foreigners-only casinos on island resorts.

Maung said that while casinos are banned under the current gambling law, the ministry has no objection against them.

“After the law is revised, they will be allowed,” he said.

It is understood that the Central Committee for the Development of the National Tourism Industry held a discussion on the legalization of casinos in the country in a meeting on December 1, 2017.

MP Aung Hlaing Win said, “It’s aimed to generate income for foreign tourists. There are very good businesses in Macao and Singapore. Our country has large sum of foreign debt that we need to pay back. We need to find solutions to make money for the debt. Casinos could be a major source of income.”
