Nagasaki IR plans face electoral test

Nagasaki Governor Hodo Nakamura faces an electoral challenge from a candidate affiliated with the Japan Communist Party as he seeks a third term.

Governor Nakamura is an advocate of establishing an IR at the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo city, while his opponent, Toshihiko Haraguchi, is an opponent.

The local media cites the Sasebo IR and the construction of a new dam as the top issues to be debated in the gubernatorial campaign. There is, however, no indication that Haraguchi’s candidacy is gaining traction outside of his Japan Communist Party support base.

Election Day is set for February 4.
