Nagaworld main union pushes for better status

Nagaworld’s main union is collecting a list of members in order to prove it represents more than 50 percent of employees at the Cambodian casino complex. If successful, the union will be able to apply for “most representative status” thereby gaining more bargaining power with the casino’s owners.

Once achieving the MRS status, union leaders will be able to use this status to push for a collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which would give the casino workers rights and privileges not provided by Cambodian labor law.

“Based on the labor law...wages during maternity leave are just 50 percent of normal wages,” Union advisor Sok Narith said. “But with a CBA we can demand 100 percent. We can also protect other rights like job security.”

The union’s leaders are optimistic that they will achieve most representative status by signing 3,000 members, but analysts caution that the casino could try to block the process.
