Nearly 300 people fined for smoking in Macau casinos

During the first eight months of the year, a total of 301 inspections had been jointly carried out in casinos by the Health and the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureaus, resulting in 298 people being fined for smoking in prohibited areas of the casino. Just over 80 percent of those fined were tourists. 

Currently, customers are only allowed to smoke in VIP rooms and designated smoking lounges since it was banned in October last year.

The government is looking to implement a blanket ban that would see smoking lounges removed. The Tobacco Prevention and Control Law amendment is currently with the Second Standing Committee at Macau's Legislative Assembly. The committee previously indicated it may take up to one year to complete the public consultation before the bill returns to the LA for second and final read.
