New Chitose Airport slots boosted by 20 percent

Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Keiichi Ishii has announced that the number of takeoff and landing slots at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport will be increased by 20 percent, effective next spring.

Specifically, the number of slots per hour will be expanded to 50 from the current 42, increasing the capacity of the airport to serve as the gateway to and from Hokkaido.

Minister Ishii explained, “In order to realize our vision of a tourism-oriented nation, it is very important to accommodate increased demand and anticipated future growth at New Chitose Airport.”

As of FY2018, the airport was serving more than 23 million travelers annually, with international flights in particular on the rise.

Meanwhile, as previously reported, a consortium led by Hokkaido Airport Terminal Company, the operator of New Chitose Airport’s terminal buildings, has been chosen to enter exclusive talks with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to privately operate seven airports in Hokkaido, including New Chitose Airport.
