No site for India casino ships

The Goan government has made no progress in finding another site for the state’s casino ships due to strong local opposition at each of the potential locations, local media reports.

The ships are due to be shifted from their current position in the Mandovi River in March next year.

The government had suggested alternative sites – river Zuari, Aguada bay, Chapora and Sal rivers, but all were rejected due to strong public protest.

Given the push to remove the casino boats from the river, the government has also come under pressure to restart deliberations on a casino policy. However, the report said so far there has been no progress, despite rules having been drafted in 2013.

Former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had announced a plan to shift the casinos to a location on land and to appoint a Gaming Commissioner. However, the proposal has been in limbo due to Parrikar’s illness and subsequent death earlier this year.
