NSW planning authorities reject Star’s $530 mln tower proposal

Star Entertainment Group’s plans for a six-star luxury hotel tower in Sydney has been rejected by the NSW Independent Planning Commission, with a three-person panel ruling that “the public benefits do not outweigh in the impacts associated with the application.”

The decision from the Independent Planning Commission follows a similar decision made by the NSW Department of Planning in July after the commission expressed concerns that the development lacked alignment with the emerging government planning direction or response to the local character of Pyrmont.

According to local reports, the Independent Planning Commission has ruled that the proposed development would be “overly obtrusive” to the city skyline and that it would "dominate views and vistas to and from public places, and will, therefore, reduce the visual amenity of the area".

The commission also said that it had “carefully considered” community held views, which included objections to the bulk and scale of the proposal, unacceptable visual impacts and view loss, lack of infrastructure to support the development, as well as increased traffic around the area.

The decision has been seen as the final nail in the coffin for Star Entertainment’s attempts to woo Chinese high rollers away from the upcoming Crown Barangaroo development which is set to complete in 2021.

The proposed $530 million hotel tower includes a 200-room Ritz Carlton hotel, with 204 residential apartments, located in Pyrmont.
