Opposition party Congress wants referendum on casino

The Congress in Goa has reportedly demanded an opinion poll on whether the state should continue to have casinos, local media reports.

"The time has come for an opinion poll on the issue of casinos... Casinos have made Goa into a vice capital of India," said Congress state President Luizinho Faleiro.

This is not the first time that Goa’s casinos have earned the ire of lawmakers and politicians.

Earlier this year, Faleiro slammed the BJP government, saying casinos have made Goa the sin city of India.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a social function in the state capital, Faleiro, a former Goa Chief Minister, said the government had failed to crack down on prostitution, which he claims was rampant in the state. He also said the BJP government had betrayed the people by going back on its word to do away with casinos.

Goa currently has five offshore casinos and nearly a dozen onshore casinos.
