Outgoing Hokkaido governor promotes IR to successor

Just days before she is set to leave office, outgoing Hokkaido Governor Harumi Takahashi has made her clearest statements of support for the prefecture to back Tomakomai city’s prospective IR license bid.

On Wednesday the Hokkaido Prefectural Government released a document titled “Fundamental Thinking about an Integrated Resort” which concludes that an IR bid is an important initiative for the future of the regional community.

Governor Takahashi told reporters, “I would like the next governor to make a comprehensive decision based on this fundamental thinking.”

Next Monday is Takahashi’s last day in office and the following day Naomichi Suzuki will take up his duties as her successor.

During the gubernatorial campaign and in the immediate wake of his election, Suzuki refused to clarify his own stance on an IR bid, saying only that he would make a “comprehensive decision.”
